Artistic Thought: Who am I and why am I here?

This is a little different from my usual blog. Recently, I watched a movie called “Local Color,” which was about an artist exploring his creativity and expression of it- it really hit home for me. As a boy, I grew up lost in music and the world around me- escaping the harshness of my environment at the time. I loved music and still do. My grandfather played violin and I have two of his musical instruments. The music room at my house holds a piano, a couple guitars, a clarinet, a couple violins, and a bass violin; all there for artistic expression and sharing the world in which they live and play. Music can be heard in every sound created outside the walls of any building, inside the walls in which we breathe and even deeper in the hearts of each one of us.

My daughter is an artist that loves to create from what she sees and feels inside. I see the joy of her creation and the expression of her very existence as I steal a look into her work. It reminds me of the artistic boy I once was, playing in the creativity of my own mind and existence.

I have since found a new way to play in that creativity, having realized a new canvas. My canvas is in the creative realm of medicine. There is creativity in studying the intricacies of the frailness of the human body, wondering at its marvels and at its depth of design. Each day I awaken to a new world painted on a canvas of the lives I see. Creating hopes and dreams for a safer and brighter future and then, hopefully, delivering that to what I treasure; the human spirit is what brings me the greatest joy. Life is not merely an existence, but an artistic expression of who we are and the lives we touch every day. The canvas that is left is the lives of the people changed and living the life of their dreams as a result of our contact with them.

Medicine is an artistic expression- not one to have an endpoint with how to treat a symptom, but one of a journey to create a life of joy and fulfillment from within.

Just some thoughts to ponder. I would love to hear your thoughts…

Enjoy your day!

Weight Loss and Hormones: What is the connection?

As we age our hormone levels decline as well as our health. Our hormonal balance is a lot like a musical composition. When it is in perfect balance it is pleasant and peaceful and everything makes sense. But when there is one vital “instrument” off it is only noise and it becomes annoying.

Thyroid: I was told my labs were normal, but I feel bad!

Well just because one test namely TSH is normal doesn’t mean that the thyroid is functioning optimally.  In fact most labs are based on a “normal” range that simply means that is where 95 percent of the population is: between one number and the next.
